Developing Methods for Assessing Restraint System Use

Much of what we know about use of vehicle restraint systems is derived from data collected in the field both through interviews and direct observation. UMTRI researchers have been in the forefront developing, refining, and validating various methods used for assessing restraint system use. While most of this work occurs as part of larger projects, such as a statewide analysis of booster seat use or nighttime safety belt use, some projects have been devoted solely to method development. UMTRI researchers have also developed guidebooks to help communities measure use of restraints.
