Urban Freeway/Arterial Traffic Control and Management

Constraints on new road construction create a need to seek innovative solutions to manage increasing traffic demands on freeways and in urban environments, particularly on facilities shared by cars, trucks, and transit vehicles. The complexity of traffic management problems is further amplified when the needs of cyclists and pedestrians are added. Research conducted at UMTRI focuses on applications of new sensing technologies for the development of traffic control strategies for freeways and coordinated arterials considering the needs of the various transportation modes involved and capable of automatically adjusting to changes in traffic conditions.
