UMTRI Biosciences has a complete machine shop for use in constructing customized test equipment and laboratory fixtures. Machinery includes four vertical mills (one with an anilam 3-axis CNC controller), four engine lathes, three drill presses, a surface grinder, and associated tooling. The welding equipment consists of a Miller Syncrowave 250 DX for TIG and stick arc welding, and a Lincoln Idealarc CV300 for wire feed MIG welding. All types of metal can be welded, including alloys and aluminum. Oxy-acetylene sets and a plasma cutter are available for cutting, forming, brazing, and soldering operations. A variety of brakes, shears, and rollers are used for sheet metal fabrication. Two full-time machinists make individual parts or complete assemblies from engineering blueprints or concept sketches. The instrumentation lab is supported by an electrical/computer engineer and an electronic technician. Complete instrument setup, calibration, repair and custom build can be performed in-house in the electronics lab. Equipment includes soldering stations, test meters, and calibration fixtures. Capabilities include building strain gage load cells, basic transducer setup, complex transducer arrays, and unique application installation and testing.
