Bob Goodsell joined UMTRI in 2000 and is a programmer analyst in the Engineering Systems Group. He earned a BS in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University in 1979 and a master of architecture degree from the University of Illinois in 1983. He has been employed as a Visual Basic programmer since 1996. Prior to joining UMTRI, he worked for Siemens Electrocom and as a contract employee.

At UMTRI Bob has worked extensively in database design and programming using Microsoft SQL Server and Visual Basic. From 2007 through 2012, while continuing to work at UMTRI, he taught a course in VB programming, database design, and SQL in the Industrial & Operations Engineering Department at the University of Michigan.

Bob has worked mostly on projects involving instrumented vehicles collecting data and video for naturalistic driving studies of modern safety technologies, including radar-, camera-, and GPS-based systems. His primary role has been providing software tools that make the data comprehensible to researchers, especially custom viewer tools that allow for the simultaneous viewing of videos from several cameras, along with sound, vehicle data, GPS data, and more. In addition, Bob has created several programs that move and parse data received from UMTRI’s onboard computers and other devices. He has contributed to many projects, including RSA (2001), ACAS (2003), RDCW (2004), IVBSS (2008), Alzheimer’s (2010), Safety Pilot (2013), OnStarFCM (2014), OnStarCIB (2016), and AACVTE (2018).
