Impact Biomechanics
UMTRI’s sled lab simulates vehicle crashes in a controlled laboratory setting.
This allows researchers to study the effects of collisions on occupants and test the performance of safety restrains such as safety belts, child safety seats, vehicle seats and wheelchairs. The sled system offers flexibility by recreating various crash scenarios including speed, forces and impact angles without the need for a complete vehicle. Tests are often conducted using anthropomorphic test devices (crash test dummies) instrumented with sensors to collect detailed data on forces, accelerations, and potential injuries.
The UMTRI sled impact test lab is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited to conduct impact tests of wheelchairs, wheelchair seating systems, wheelchair tie downs and occupant-restraint systems (WTORS) to evaluate their frontal- impact performance relative to crashworthiness criteria in the latest U.S. and international industry standards.
In addition to the research conducted at UMTRI, we also provide for-fee services to interested parties who wish to evaluate child safety seat performance, test wheelchair and wheelchair tiedown/restraints, request crash data analysis, or request automotive test drive evaluations.
